Prosthodontic/Restorative Dentistry

“Prosthodontics” refers to the procedures involved in reconstructing and replacing missing natural teeth.  Prosthodontics implies more complex procedures, whereas “restorative dentistry” refers mainly to the every-day dental procedures with which we are all familiar.

Prosthodontics as a dental specialty is divided into fixed, removable, implant, and maxillofacial prosthodontics.  Fixed prosthodontics refers to tooth replacements not removable by the patient.  Removable prosthodontics refers to tooth replacements removable by the patient. Implant prosthodontics refers to all tooth replacements involving dental implants. Maxillofacial prosthodontics refers to tooth and tissue replacements for intra- or extra-oral head and neck anatomy either congenitally absent, or lost to diseases such as head and neck cancer.
